Jamaican Traditional Dance Forms

1. Maypole (15th Century)

  • Description: Also referred to as "long ribbon pole" in rural areas; it was a popular social dance after emancipation and performed on Queen Victoria's birthday.

2. Quadrille (18th-19th Century)

  • Description: A popular dance at tea parties, house openings, and family celebrations.

3. Myal (1940s)

  • Description: One of the oldest dances in Jamaica and is associated with a type of religious observance.

4. Dinki Mini/Gerreh (18th to 19th Century)

  • Description: Became popular from the death of Tacky, a hero of the maroons, and is associated with annual festival celebrations.

5. Bruckins (1834)

  • Description: This dance form is part of a pageant with a processional of kings, queens, courtiers, soldiers, and pages.

6. Ettu (1860-1893)

  • Description: Involves the dancers' elbow and shoulders, often doing a sideways shuffling dance.
