Timeline of Jamaican Music

1. Folk Music (1838)

  • Description: Popular dance form during slavery and after the abolition.

2. Mento Music

  • Description: Heavily influenced by folk music, where the genre married the rhythmic call and response type of singing.

3. Ska

  • Description: Musicians combined mento and jazz to create a new genre known as ska.

4. Rocksteady (1966-1968)

  • Description: A mix of jazz, Caribbean music, and African music, featuring a slower tempo than ska.

5. Reggae (1968-1983)

  • Description: Based on ska and earlier forms of Jamaican popular music, which includes a four beat rhythm.

6. Dancehall

  • Description: Also known as reggae's offshoot, it is the deejay style that features raps or toasts over various rhythms.
